Postcommit on Mac when using Docker local set up

I built Docker container and got:

as an error. Not sure if this is Docker or the emulation layer on a Mac affecting the build.

I did try which_r as ./scripts/which_r and got a permission denied even though I was running as the vscode user.

I check my notes and I also got this message when I tested running the container locally on macOS via GitPod (back in February, but the release version of the dev container is older than that).

It seems to be a general issue that containers cannot truly change file ownership of mounted host directories - so this would affect Windows as well as macOS. Files in .git can be particularly problematic.

The first thing to investigate is whether we need the chown command at all.

Otherwise we should try to only chown files that need it - maybe restrict to /workspaces/r-dev-env/scripts?
