I have the same issue in my project. It happens when I clear the 'items' while they are still being displayed.

I work around by calling

this.refs.autocomplete.handleInputBlur();

before I clear the items. But it should probably be handled internally.

I found another case where this happens:
When you type some text in the input and already press the "arrow down" key on the keyboard, before the suggestions have been displayed.
